Since the new curriculum has been announced in 2007, Sogetsu teachers overseas are wondering how we are going to teach. I have taken a few seminars in HQ since then. In our new curriculum, there will be no change in Kakeiho (basics and variations). Book 1 & 2 will become a new Book 1. Book 3 & 4 will become a new Book 2.

Themes of new Book 2 are carefully thought out ‘to enjoy ikebana through pursuing materials and by feeling them by hand.’ In comparison to the present textbooks, there are more themes to ‘arrange flowers.’ There are less so-called ‘creative plays’ (zokei-asobi) in our new Book 2. Nowadays, it is said that we are urged to turn our eyes to natural surroundings. Increased importance of facing natural materials is emphasized in the new curriculum.

Only new textbooks should be used to teach Sogetsu classes from April 2009.

I would like to go over the 12 themes in the new curriculum in my workshops this year following last year’s workshops. Since approaches of new books were changed, some of their expressions have been changed.  I would like to work with you to understand the new curriculum with new Book 1 & Book 2.

Workshops are on Tuesday afternoon classes from 1:00 P.M. – 3:00 P.M.

Evening classes are from 6:30 P.M. – 8:30 P.M. Please let me know by the Saturday before the class you want to attend.
